If only I could tame my words—they swirl
and surge together in a maelstrom.

Maze of Mystery! OOOoooh! What's that?

Shawm curious? It’s a Renaissance-era instrument somewhat like an early oboe with a brash, buzzing sort of sound. Not to be confused with the sackbut (hey, no smirking!).

The group Calliope has a fun album of Renaissance tunes played on authentic instruments that I listen to often while I’m writing. Here’s an example on YouTube that features the shawm. Give it a listen!
